Environment settings and presets
The ENVIRONMENT BROWSER holds the sky, clouds, night sky, sun, ground plane, wind, fog and background picture of a scene, along with the presets that set all of them in one click. Open it from the ENVIRONMENT card at the bottom right of the window, with ⌘E or with the ENVIRONMENT BROWSER command in the command palette. The presets are on the left side of the panel. On the right are a preview, the settings in the order used below and the buttons at the foot.
Each change goes into the scene as you make it, and a slider drag is one undo step. The panel has no APPLY or CANCEL; its X only closes it. The environment is saved with the scene. Where a section has an ENABLED switch, turning it off dims the rows below it and keeps their values. For the tasks these settings serve, see Set the sky, sun, fog and clouds.
Preset list
| Label | Effect | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| SEARCH PRESETS | Shows only the preset cards whose names contain the text typed, ignoring capitals. Folder cards stay in view. Inside a folder the field reads SEARCH IN and the folder name. | Always |
| + FOLDER | Adds a folder for presets, with its name ready to type | Dimmed inside a folder, since folders cannot hold folders |
| ROLL | Replaces the whole environment with a random one, as described in Roll. One undo step per click. | Always |
| BUILT-IN | The 13 presets that come with Orbit, listed in Built-in environments | At the top level only |
| USER PRESETS | Saved presets and folders. Inside a folder the heading shows the folder name. | Always |
| A preset card | Replaces the whole environment with the preset's, including ground plane, fog, wind and background, as one undo step. The card of the preset in use has a thicker, colored outline. While an unsaved roll is showing, a click first asks Replace the rolled sky? | Always |
| + NEW PRESET | Saves the current environment as a preset in the folder being viewed and applies it. The name is Rolled Sky and a number after a roll, Preset and a number otherwise. | Hidden while the search field holds text |
A preset saved this way is a .orbitenv file. Renaming, moving, deleting and importing presets are covered in Save your own presets.
Preview and name
At the top of the right side, a chrome sphere shows the environment with its reflections and fog. It is redrawn shortly after the last change.
Under the sphere is the name of the environment. A built-in preset shows its name in capitals and a roll shows CUSTOM. A user preset shows its name in a field, where typing a new name and pressing Return renames the preset. EDITS UPDATE THIS PRESET below the field means that each change in the panel is also written into that preset's file.
Sky
| Label | Values and default | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| TOP | Color, #7394D1 | The color straight overhead |
| BOTTOM | Color, #1F2640 | The color at the horizon. The sky blends from TOP to BOTTOM. |
| TURBULENCE | 0 to 1.00, default 0.40 | Breaks up the gradient with noise. At 0 the blend is smooth. |
| INTENSITY | 0.50 to 3.00, default 1.00 | Brightens or darkens the whole sky, and the sky seen in shiny objects |
While the Void preset is applied, the sky stays black whatever these settings say. Another preset, ROLL or SAVE AS PRESET ends that.
Clouds
| Label | Values and default | Effect | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| ENABLED | On or off, default off | Covers the sky with clouds | Always |
| COVERAGE | 0 to 1.00, default 0.50 | How much of the sky the clouds cover, from clear at 0 to overcast at 1 | Clouds on |
| SCALE | 0.10 to 10.00, default 3.00 | Higher values give smaller, more numerous clouds | Clouds on |
| OCTAVES | 1 to 8, default 4 | Layers of fine detail in each cloud | Clouds on |
| HORIZON FALLOFF | 0.50 to 8.00, default 1.00 | Higher values thin the clouds near the horizon and gather them overhead | Clouds on |
| CLOUD COLOR | Color, white | The color of the clouds overhead | Clouds on |
| SHADOW COLOR | Color, #9999B2 | The color the clouds shade toward at the horizon | Clouds on |
Clouds cover the stars. The sun and the moon are drawn in front of them. With wind in the scene, the clouds drift while Loop Studio plays and in exported loops.
Night
STARS and MOON each have their own switch, and the rows under a switch are dimmed while it is off.
| Label | Values and default | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| STARS | On or off, default off | Fills the sky with stars |
| DENSITY | 0 to 1.00, default 0.50 | How many stars there are |
| BRIGHTNESS | 0 to 3.00, default 1.00 | How bright the stars are |
| MOON | On or off, default off | Shows a moon |
| PHASE | 0 to 1.00, default 0.35 | How much of the moon is lit, from new at 0 through full at 0.50 to new again at 1. Below 0.50 the moon is waxing. |
| SIZE | 0.20 to 4.00, default 1.00 | The size of the moon. At 1.00 its radius is about 2.6°. |
| AZIMUTH | 0° to 360°, default 220° | The moon's position around the horizon, measured the same way as the sun's |
| ELEVATION | 0° to 90°, default 40° | The moon's height above the horizon |
| GLOW | 0 to 1.00, default 0.35 | The strength of the glow around the moon |
| MOTTLE | 0 to 1.00, default 0.35 | The dark patches on the face of the moon |
| MOON COLOR | Color, #EBF0FF | The tint of the moon |
The panel has no control for where the stars fall. A roll that gives a night sky scatters them again. The moon gives the scene no light. To light a night scene, follow Make a night sky.
Sun
The sun has two switches. VISIBLE SUN DISC draws it in the sky, and SUN LIGHT makes it light the scene. Either works without the other, and AZIMUTH and ELEVATION place both.
| Label | Values and default | Effect | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| VISIBLE SUN DISC | On or off, default off | Draws the sun and its glow in the sky | Always |
| SUN LIGHT | On or off, default off | Lights the scene from the direction of the sun, with hard shadows | Always |
| LIGHT INTENSITY | 0 to 4.00, default 1.00 | The strength of the sunlight | SUN LIGHT on |
| AZIMUTH | −180° to 360°, default 45° | The sun's position around the horizon | Always |
| ELEVATION | 0° to 90°, default 35° | The sun's height, from the horizon at 0° to straight overhead at 90° | Always |
Three groups under DISC, INNER HALO and OUTER CORONA shape the drawn sun. All three are dimmed while VISIBLE SUN DISC is off.
| Group | Label | Values and default | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| DISC | SIZE | 0.10° to 15.00°, default 1.49° | The radius of the disc as an angle |
| DISC | INTENSITY | 1.00 to 8.00, default 3.00 | The brightness of the disc |
| DISC | COLOR | Color, #FFF2CC | The color of the disc and of the sunlight |
| INNER HALO | SIZE | 0.05 to 1.00, default 0.05 | The width of the tight glow around the disc. Higher values spread it wider; the value is not an angle. |
| INNER HALO | INTENSITY | 0 to 2.00, default 0.60 | The brightness of the tight glow |
| INNER HALO | COLOR | Color, #FFF2CC | The color of the tight glow |
| OUTER CORONA | SIZE | 0.10 to 3.00, default 0.30 | The width of the wide, soft glow, on the same scale as INNER HALO |
| OUTER CORONA | INTENSITY | 0 to 2.00, default 0.25 | The brightness of the wide glow |
| OUTER CORONA | COLOR | Color, #FFD9A6 | The color of the wide glow |
The sunlight takes the disc COLOR, which is dimmed with the rest of the group while VISIBLE SUN DISC is off. To change the color of the light, turn the disc on, set the color and turn the disc off again. The sunlight always casts shadows. They show in the LIVE preview and in renders, since the viewport draws none. Light a scene covers the lights you place yourself.
Ground plane
| Label | Values and default | Effect | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| ENABLED | On or off, default off | Adds a flat floor that runs to the horizon | Always |
| HEIGHT | −10 m to 0 m, default 0 m | The level of the floor. The slider does not go above 0. | Ground on |
| COLOR | Color, #0D0D12 | The color of the floor, and the first color of its pattern | Ground on |
| REFLECTION | 0 to 1.00, default 0.60 | How strongly the floor mirrors the scene | Ground on |
| ROUGHNESS | 0 to 1.00, default 0 | Weakens the reflection. The reflection does not blur. | Ground on |
| RECEIVE SHADOWS | On or off, default on | Lets shadows fall on the floor | Ground on |
| PATTERN | SOLID, CHECKER, HEX TILES, POLKA DOTS, GRADIENT STRIPES, WIREFRAME GRID or CONCENTRIC RINGS; default SOLID | Draws a pattern in two colors over the floor | Ground on |
| ACCENT | Color, #1F1F26 | The second color of the pattern | Shown when PATTERN is not SOLID |
| PATTERN SCALE | 0.10 to 4.00, default 1.00 | The size of the tiles, dots or stripes, in meters | Shown when PATTERN is not SOLID |
In the viewport the floor reflects only the sky. Objects appear in its reflection in the LIVE preview and in renders, for the reasons in The viewport, the preview and the render.
Wind
| Label | Values and default | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| DIRECTION | 0° to 360°, default 0° | The direction the wind blows from |
| STRENGTH | 0 to 1.00, default 0 | How hard the wind blows. At 0 the scene has no wind. |
The section has no ENABLED switch; a STRENGTH of 0 turns the wind off. Plants lean away from the wind, and water with FOLLOW WIND on takes its direction from DIRECTION. The swaying of plants and the drift of glowing motes, clouds and the banks of LAYERED fog happen while Loop Studio plays and in exported loops. See Make things move in the wind.
Fog
The rows below ENABLED are dimmed while fog is off. The rows each MODE shows are marked in the last column; the others are hidden.
| Label | Values and default | Effect | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| ENABLED | On or off, default off | Fades distant parts of the scene into the fog color | Always |
| COLOR | Color, #808CA6 | The color of the fog | Every mode |
| MODE | EXPONENTIAL, LINEAR or LAYERED; default EXPONENTIAL | How the fog builds up. EXPONENTIAL thickens smoothly with distance, LINEAR ramps from START DIST to END DIST and LAYERED lies low and thins with height. | Every mode |
| START DIST | 0 m to 40 m, default 0 m | The distance from the camera that stays clear | Every mode |
| END DIST | 1 m to 150 m, default 30 m | The distance where the fog is complete | LINEAR |
| DENSITY | 0 to 0.15, default 0.035 | The thickness of the fog. At 0.035, objects about 20 m away are roughly half hidden. In LAYERED mode it is the thickness at BASE HEIGHT. | EXPONENTIAL and LAYERED |
| BASE HEIGHT | −10 m to 20 m, default 0 m | The height at which the fog has its DENSITY. It is thicker below and thinner above. | LAYERED |
| SCALE HEIGHT | 0.50 m to 20 m, default 4.00 m | How quickly the fog thins with height. Smaller values keep it closer to the ground. | LAYERED |
| NOISE AMOUNT | 0 to 1.00, default 0 | Breaks the fog into patchy banks. At 0 it is even. | LAYERED |
| NOISE SCALE | 0.02 to 1.00, default 0.15 | The size of the banks. Higher values make them smaller; at 0.15 they are about 6 m across. | LAYERED |
| MAX AMOUNT | 0 to 1.00, default 1.00 | The most the fog can hide. Below 1, the farthest objects stay faintly visible. | Every mode |
When fog is off, choosing the TERRA '96 look in RENDER SETTINGS shows TERRA PAIRS WITH FOG with an ENABLE button, described in Render settings. ENABLE turns fog on in LAYERED mode with COLOR #8C9EB8, DENSITY 0.02, START DIST 0 m, BASE HEIGHT 0 m, SCALE HEIGHT 4.00 m, NOISE AMOUNT 0 and NOISE SCALE 0.15, and leaves END DIST and MAX AMOUNT as they were.
Background
| Label | Values and default | Effect | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| IMAGE | The file name, or NONE by default | The picture shown behind the scene | Always |
| CHOOSE | Button | Opens a file dialog to pick the picture. One undo step. | Always |
| CLEAR | Button | Removes the picture. One undo step. | Shown once a picture is set |
| FIT | STRETCH, FIT, FILL or TILE; default FILL | FILL covers the view and crops the picture, FIT shows all of it with the sky around it, STRETCH covers the view without keeping its proportions and TILE repeats it at its own pixel size | Shown once a picture is set |
The picture appears only where the camera looks past the objects. Shiny objects still reflect the sky, and the scene is still lit by it. Saving the scene stores a copy of the picture in the file, reduced to 1024 pixels on its longest side if it is larger. Under the file name, EMBEDDED means Orbit is using that stored copy because the original file cannot be found, and MISSING · USING SKY means neither is available and the sky shows in its place.
Footer
| Label | Effect | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| SAVE AS PRESET | Saves the current environment as a preset in the folder being viewed and applies it, as + NEW PRESET does | Always |
| REVEAL IN FINDER | Shows the preset's .orbitenv file in the Finder | While a user preset is applied |
Built-in environments
A card replaces the whole environment. It turns off the ground plane, fog, wind and background picture and returns each setting it does not list below to its default. None of the cards turns on SUN LIGHT. Card names appear as written here; the name under the preview shows them in capitals.

The two angles of a sun disc are its AZIMUTH and ELEVATION.
Roll
ROLL picks one of seven moods at random, each about as likely as the others, and then chooses every setting within that mood's limits. Sometimes one part of a roll, such as the cloud colors, strays further from the mood. A roll turns off the ground plane and the background picture and sets a random wind DIRECTION. The moods have no names in the panel.
| Mood | Sun | Clouds | LAYERED fog | Night | Wind STRENGTH |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blue daytime sky | Disc and light, 25° to 50° high | Always | 20% of rolls, DENSITY 0.010 to 0.020 | None | 0.15 to 0.45 |
| Low golden sun | Disc and light, 3° to 18° high | Always | 55%, 0.020 to 0.040 | None | 0.10 to 0.35 |
| Alien day | Disc and light | Always | 30%, 0.015 to 0.035 | None | 0.20 to 0.50 |
| Alien night | Dim cyan green light, no disc | Always | 35%, 0.020 to 0.040 | Stars, and a moon in 60% of rolls | 0.15 to 0.40 |
| Night | Dim, cool light, no disc | 70% of rolls | 35%, 0.015 to 0.030 | Stars, and a moon in 75% of rolls | 0.10 to 0.30 |
| Dust storm | Light, and a dim red disc in 50% of rolls | Always | 70%, 0.030 to 0.060 | None | 0.55 to 0.90 |
| Dark, empty sky | Faint light, no disc | None | Never | None | 0 |
Every roll turns on SUN LIGHT, so a rolled night scene is lit by a dim light that stands in for the moon. Rolled fog has a MAX AMOUNT of 0.90 and takes a paler version of the rolled BOTTOM color. A roll is not a preset until it is saved with SAVE AS PRESET or + NEW PRESET.
