Menus and palette commands
Orbit's commands sit in the menu bar, in the menus of the toolbar, in the menus that open with a right-click and in the command palette, which opens with ⌘K. Keys with no menu item are in Keyboard shortcuts and mouse gestures. For where each menu sits, see The window.
Menu bar
Menu shortcuts work even while the cursor is in a text field. Orbit adds nothing to the Edit, Window and Help menus, which hold the standard macOS items.
Orbit
| Item | Shortcut | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome to Orbit | Opens the WELCOME sheet, with the four ways to start and, in the free version, the purchase buttons | |
| Settings… | ⌘, | Opens the app settings in a separate window, which closes like any window. The SETTINGS button in the toolbar opens the same settings as a sheet with a DONE button. |
| Quit Orbit | ⌘Q | Quits. With unsaved changes, Orbit first offers Save…, Discard and Cancel. |
The rest of the Orbit menu holds the standard macOS items.
File
| Item | Shortcut | Effect | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Scene | ⌘N | Asks about unsaved changes, then starts a new, empty scene | |
| New from Scene Wizard… | ⇧⌘N | Keeps a copy of the scene as one undo step, clears the stage and opens the SCENE WIZARD on its LANDSCAPE tab. Closes either browser if it is open. | |
| Open Example… | Opens the list of example scenes. Opening one asks about unsaved changes first. | ||
| Open Scene… | ⌘O | Asks about unsaved changes, then opens a .orbit file | |
| Open Recent | Up to five scenes recently saved or opened, by file name, then Clear Menu. Holding the pointer over a name shows the full path. | Clear Menu is dimmed when the list is empty | |
| Save Scene | ⌘S | Saves to the scene's file. A scene never saved asks for a name and a place. | |
| Save Scene As… | ⌥⇧⌘S | Saves under a new name or in a new place | |
| Export Turntable… | ⇧⌘E | Opens EXPORT TURNTABLE | |
| Import Object… | Adds the objects in a .orbitobj file to the scene | ||
| Import Wavefront OBJ… | Adds a .obj file to the scene as an editable mesh | ||
| Export Selected as Object… | Saves the selected objects as a .orbitobj file | Dimmed in the free version. With nothing that can be exported selected, the Mac beeps. | |
| Export Selected as OBJ… | Saves the selected objects as a .obj file | As above |
The procedures that use these items are in Save, open and recover scenes and Import and export objects.
View
| Item | Shortcut | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Command Palette | ⌘K | Opens the command palette, or closes it |
Everything else in the View menu is standard in macOS.
Toolbar menus
A toolbar menu opens below its button, or above it when there is more room there, and scrolls when it is taller than the window. It closes when you choose an item or click outside it. The arrow keys do not move through these menus.
NEW
| Item | Effect |
|---|---|
| NEW SCENE | Same as File ▸ New Scene |
| SCENE WIZARD… | Same as File ▸ New from Scene Wizard… |
IMPORT
| Item | Effect |
|---|---|
| OBJECT (.ORBITOBJ)… | Same as File ▸ Import Object… |
| WAVEFRONT OBJ (.OBJ)… | Same as File ▸ Import Wavefront OBJ… |
EXPORT
The EXPORT button is dimmed in the free version, and whenever no object or group is selected. Its tooltip says which.
| Item | Effect | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| SELECTED AS OBJECT… | Saves the selected objects as a .orbitobj file, which keeps their settings, deformers and materials | |
| SELECTED AS OBJ (.OBJ)… | Saves the selected objects as a .obj mesh | Dimmed when only water and emitters are selected, since neither has a mesh |
ADD OBJECT
SPHERE, TORUS, BOX, CYLINDER, CONE, PLATONIC, SPLINE TUBE, EXTRUDE, LATHE, HELIX, MÖBIUS, TORUS KNOT, METABALLS, TERRAIN, WATER, TEXT, SADDLE, HYPERBOLOID, PARABOLOID, GROWTH and EMITTER come first, in that order. Each adds that object at the center of the scene, resting on the ground and selected. The new object is named after its kind with a number, such as Torus 2. Object types describes each kind.
| Item | Effect |
|---|---|
| LIGHT | Adds a point light 6 m above the ground and 4 m from the center of the scene |
| PEN / LOFT | Starts the pen. See Draw shapes with the pen. |
LIGHTING
The menu holds THREE-POINT, DRAMATIC, STUDIO, NEON, BACKLIT and VOID. Choosing one replaces every light in the scene with that setup and clears the selection, in one undo step. See Light a scene.
TRANSFORM
The TRANSFORM button opens a panel headed with the number of objects it acts on, such as 1 OBJ. It is dimmed unless every selected item is an object. Each click acts on every selected object separately and records one undo step. The panel stays open until you click outside it.
| Section | Buttons | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| ROTATE | +90° X, +90° Y, +90° Z, -90° X, -90° Y, -90° Z, 180° X, 180° Y, 180° Z | Adds that turn to the object's rotation on that axis |
| RESET ROTATION | Sets the rotation to 0° on every axis | |
| SCALE | 2×, 0.5× | Doubles or halves the scale on every axis |
| MIR X, MIR Y, MIR Z | Mirrors the object across that axis | |
| RESET SCALE | Sets the scale to 1 on every axis | |
| POSITION | CENTER TO ORIGIN | Moves the object so the center of its bounding box sits at the center of the scene, 0 m on every axis |
| DROP TO GROUND | Moves the object up or down until its lowest point rests on the ground | |
| ALIGN TO GRID | Moves the position to the nearest multiple of GRID CELL in SETTINGS, 1 m at the start | |
| RESET POSITION | Sets the position to 0 m on every axis, which can leave part of the object below the ground |
See Move, rotate and scale objects.
BOOLEAN
The BOOLEAN button is dimmed until the selected objects are closed solids that touch. Its tooltip gives the reason when it is dimmed.
| Item | Effect | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| UNION | Joins the selected objects into one | |
| SUBTRACT · KEEP and the object's name | Cuts the other selected objects out of the named one, the object selected last | Listed when every other selected object overlaps the named one |
| INTERSECT | Keeps only the space the objects share | As for SUBTRACT |
See Combine and cut objects with booleans.
Right-click menus
In the viewport, right-clicking an object that is not selected selects it alone before the menu opens. Right-clicking one of several selected items keeps the selection, and a header such as 3 OBJECTS SELECTED tops the menu. These menus close the same way as the toolbar menus.
An object in the viewport
The items appear in this order, divided into groups by lines.
| Item | Effect | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| HIDE | Hides the selected items | |
| ISOLATE or EXIT ISOLATE | Shows only the selected objects, or ends isolation | |
| FOCUS | Frames the selected objects or the light. The camera then circles around what it framed. | |
| SET DOF FOCUS | Sets FOCUS DIST in RENDER SETTINGS to the distance from the camera to the objects, and turns on DEPTH OF FIELD | Always listed. Does nothing for a light alone. |
| DUPLICATE | Same as ⌘D | |
| DROP TO GROUND, CENTER TO ORIGIN | As in the TRANSFORM panel | Objects selected |
| BOOLEAN UNION | As UNION in the BOOLEAN menu | Two or more objects that can be combined |
| BOOLEAN SUBTRACT, BOOLEAN INTERSECT | As in the BOOLEAN menu | Every other object overlaps the one selected last |
| SPLIT X, SPLIT Y, SPLIT Z | Cuts the object in two through the middle of its bounding box, across that axis | One closed solid selected |
| MAKE EDITABLE, ENTER POLY EDIT or EXIT POLY EDIT | Turns the object into a mesh and starts poly edit, or enters or leaves poly edit | One object selected. MAKE EDITABLE is listed only for kinds that can become a mesh. |
| EDIT MATERIAL | Opens the MATERIAL BROWSER | Objects selected, other than a lone emitter |
| LOCK or UNLOCK | Locks or unlocks every selected item | |
| NEW GROUP | Puts the selected items in a new group | The right-clicked item is in no group |
| ADD TO and a group's name | Adds the selected items to that group | The right-clicked item is in no group, once a group exists |
| SELECT GROUP | Selects the group the object belongs to | The right-clicked item is in a group |
| REMOVE FROM GROUP | Takes the selected items out of their groups | The right-clicked item is in a group |
| MOVE TO and a group's name | Moves the selected items to that group | The right-clicked item is in a group, once another group exists |
| DELETE | Deletes the selected items. A selected group is dissolved and its members stay. |
Empty space in the viewport
Right-clicking water opens this menu too, since water counts as empty space here. The menu of a water object opens from its row in OBJECTS.
| Item | Effect |
|---|---|
| ADD and a kind of object, such as ADD SPHERE | Adds the object at the point on the ground under the pointer, or at the center of the scene when the pointer is over the sky. The 21 kinds follow the order of the ADD OBJECT menu. |
| ADD LIGHT | Adds a light 6 m above the point under the pointer |
| PEN / LOFT | Starts the pen |
| FRAME SCENE | Frames the whole scene |
| SAVE CAMERA SNAPSHOT | Saves the camera angle as a snapshot |
A row in OBJECTS
| Row | Items |
|---|---|
| Object | DUPLICATE, LOCK or UNLOCK, HIDE, ISOLATE or EXIT ISOLATE, the group items, DELETE |
| Light | DUPLICATE, LOCK or UNLOCK, HIDE, the group items, DELETE |
| Group | LOCK GROUP or UNLOCK GROUP, DISSOLVE |
The group items are NEW GROUP and ADD TO a group for a row outside any group, and REMOVE FROM GROUP and MOVE TO another group for a row inside one. On an object or light row, each item acts on the whole selection when the row is part of it, and on the row alone otherwise. DISSOLVE removes the group and keeps its members. The OBJECTS menus have no item for renaming; the name field at the top of the INSPECTOR renames. See Organize a scene.
ORBIT in the controls panel
Right-clicking ORBIT, or clicking the arrow beside it, opens 3 SECONDS / ROTATION, 6 SECONDS / ROTATION, 10 SECONDS / ROTATION, 15 SECONDS / ROTATION and 30 SECONDS / ROTATION, each of which sets the speed and starts the camera circling, then EXPORT TURNTABLE….
A snapshot in the dock
| Item | Effect |
|---|---|
| RENAME | Edits the snapshot's name in place |
| UPDATE | Saves the current camera angle into this snapshot, with a new picture |
| DELETE | Removes the snapshot |
See Save camera angles.
Command palette
⌘K opens the palette over the window. Type part of a command's name to narrow the list, then press Return or click a command to run it; Run any command by name shows how. The palette shows no group names, and its list holds at most nine commands. With the field empty, the list starts with the last eight commands run since Orbit started, then continues in the order of the groups below. Where a command has a shortcut, the palette shows it at the right of the line, written as in the Hint column. A few hints list the modifier keys in a different order from the menus, such as ⌘⇧E for ⇧⌘E, but the keys are the same.
